What is it to remember through art? Which stories emerge when art gives shape to memory? And what does the visibility, or lack thereof, tell of whose voices are heard? This anthology aims to add depth and nuance to questions around monuments and memorial art that is, the thoughts, discourses and artworks that find expression in our shared spaces. 25 texts in six chapters deal with notions of monumentality, the preconditions for representation of memory, the doing of democracy, and traces of power and oppression. Some texts are based on specific works, others seek to formulate a more overarching critique of public frameworks in relation to public art and memory. The artworks discussed take a variety of shapes they range from explicit monuments and memorials to work connected to issues of democracy. The anthology is based on the understanding of public art as a form of care care of our common spaces in both the material and metaphorical sense, where art can be seen as a potential space for reflection, not only on a personal level but as an opportunity to consider and try out new communities and societal models.
