Beskrivning

This edited collection addresses the issue of Anglo-Indian identity from a range of perspectives—historic, gendered, diasporic, and through literature and film. Despite the long history of their presence on the Indian subcontinent since the late 15th century, Anglo-Indians, or people who have descended from a European parent on the paternal side, have remained largely invisible in colonial and postcolonial histories and other scholarly literature. Meanwhile, media representations of Anglo-Indians have contributed to the misrepresentation of Anglo-Indians as an exotic ‘community in decline’ living in an anachronistic British past. Taken in concert, the papers collected here provide ethnographically, empirically, and theoretically valuable insight into the lives and identity of Anglo-Indians through pre-Independence, Independence, and to post-Independence times. Ultimately, this volume will build upon frameworks in a multitude of disciplines, including particularly anthropology, cultural studies, and human geography, complicating thus-far largely Western-based perspectives on Anglo-Indian identity.
